Domestic Violence Prevention -- October Events

Purple Courthouse and City HalleNOugh! Honoring the Victims of Domestic Violence in Buncombe County and Paving the Way for a Violence Free Future

Buncombe County Government invites the public to stand with us as we move towards a violence free future. October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and during this month we are honoring victims of Intimate Partner Violence and taking action to create safety and awareness for our county through a Coordinated Community Response which includes the creation of the Family Justice Center. The Family Justice Center brings agencies together in a practical way that makes the path to safety for victims and families more clear.

The Family Justice Center is a collaborative effort and best practice model that brings together community partners to effectively assist victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.  An  important component of the Coordinated Community Response is the ability to address the perpetrators of domestic violence through targeted interventions.

There are several events open to the public that provide opportunities to show your support for victims of domestic violence as well as to learn more about the new Family Justice Center.

Join us as we partner with Helpmate in honoring the victims and survivors of abuse by attending the Domestic Violence Awareness Vigil and ceremonial lighting of the courthouse on Thursday, October 1st from 7-9 p.m. at Pack Square Park in downtown Asheville. This free event is open to the public. Speakers, survivors, and music are a part of the lineup as well as the display of the Clothesline Project, a testimony to the stories of those impacted by violence.

There is another event this month on Monday, October 12th where leaders in our community are coming together to show their support for the Family Justice Center.  The public is invited to the reception on Monday, October 12th  from 5:30 – 7:00 pm at  60 Court Plaza, Downtown Asheville. This event is free and provides a great opportunity to learn more about what it takes to prevent domestic and sexual violence.

On October 29th, we are inviting employers to attend a Lunch and Learn on violence in the workplace with an emphasis on domestic violence. Domestic violence impacts the workplace not only in terms of an employee’s safety and productivity but it also compromises the safety of all employees. Attend this lunch and learn to learn more about the signs of intimate partner violence and what action employers can take to keep employees safe.  The workshop is October 29th from 12- 1:30 pm at 200 College Street, Ground Floor Conference Room.  Registration required (christa.lance@buncombecounty.org).

Partners in Buncombe County are saying eNOugh and we mean it. Please come out to one of these events to educate yourself about this insidious type of violence and learn how we can be safer together, stronger together.  Please visit www.buncombecounty.org/enough to learn more about these events and to register your attendance at the workshop
