Court is now in session for Buncombe County's Veteran's Treatment Court. It recetnly began with an opening ceremony with Judge Marvin Pope, Superior Court Judge (District 28), county and local leaders, and court administrators speaking of its importance.
In this Buncombe News Update, Judge Pope will talk about what exactly Veteran's Treatment Court is, and why it's important to Buncombe County.
This new treatment court will support military personnel by addressing the underlying causes of criminality and focusing on treatment and rehabilitation. Participants will be closely monitored as they engage in treatment, search for employment or educational opportunities, find stable housing and complete an 18 to 24 month program that could have a case dismissed, consistent with North Carolina law; and
The treatment court will feature veteran/peer mentors who will inspire success and help them reintegrate into the community. The program was made possible through support of the Buncombe County Commissioners; 28th Judicial District, Superior Court Division; Governor’s Crime Commission, Buncombe County Superior Court, District Attorney’s Office, Public Defender’s Office, the NC Office of Probation, the Charles George VA Medical Center and many other offices, groups and community organizations.
