Banned Books Week: The Scarlett Letter

The Weaverville Library Friends are once again sponsoring a lecture by retired English professor Nancy Lewis on Tuesday, October 9 at 7 p.m. on Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter.  Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of America's most important writers and The Scarlet Letter is his masterpiece.  Despite its 17th century Puritan setting, this novel about adultery exposes religious hypocrisy and raises questions about the nature of good and evil, sin and guilt.

This, undoubtedly, is why it has been banned at various times since its publication and why it still appears on the most recent lists of banned literary classics.
