Public Information Officer

An organization’s reputation, and even its continued existence can depend on the degree to which its customers support its goals and policies. At the Sheriffs Office our customers are the citizens of Buncombe County, building and maintaining positive relationships with the citizenry is vital to our success.

The Public Information Officer is responsible for establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships with the public as well as representatives from print and broadcast journalism. The P.I.O. handles all news releases and works with the members of the Buncombe County Sheriffs Office to present a positive and professional image. It is the job of the P.I.O. to “tell the organization’s story.”

The Public Information Office serves four primary purposes:

  • To serve as the official liaison through which accurate information can be obtained by mail, e-mail or fax requests in compliance with the North Carolina Public Information Act.
  • To Promote and maintain a relationship of mutual cooperation and respect with all news media in support of their efforts to provide accurate "news" to residents and visitors of Western North Carolina.
  • To provide up to date and correct information on current incidents and events to the citizens of Buncombe County.
  • To maintain a proactive website consisting of a variety of information, programs and services available for media and public review.
