Public Information Officer

Establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships with the public.

The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office employs a Public Information Officer (PIO) in order to fulfill public records requests and respond to media inquiries. In order to track public records requests, we ask that you make the request in writing by email, postal mail or by delivering the request in person.

Note: The definition of a public record follows the North Carolina General Statute definition contained in § 132-1. Please note that requests for analysis, reports or any reference material that does not exist at the time of the request is not considered a public record.


Submitting Written Requests

The written request should contain the following information:

  • The name and address of the requester;
  • The telephone number and/or email of the requester if available;
  • A complete description of the requested record.

Incident Reports from the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office can be found online utilizing the Police to Citizen website.

Primary Purposes

  1. To serve as the official liaison through which accurate information can be obtained by mail, e-mail, or fax requests in compliance with the North Carolina Public Information Act.
  2. To promote and maintain a relationship of mutual cooperation and respect with all news media in support of their efforts to provide accurate information to residents and visitors of Western North Carolina.
  3. To provide up-to-date and correct information on current incidents and events to the residents of Buncombe County.
  4. To maintain a proactive website consisting of a variety of information, programs, and services available for media and public review.
