Recycling at the Solid Waste Management
Facility
The following materials are accepted at the Buncombe
County Solid Waste Management Facilitys Convenience
Center at no charge:
- lead acid batteries
- newspaper
- corrugated cardboard
- blue bags or co-mingled recyclables including:
- #1 & #2 plastic
- aluminum cans
- clear
- green & brown glass
- and steel cans
- motor oils
- tires
- and white goods including:
- stoves
- refrigerators
- air conditioners
- freezers
- and all metals
The Solid Waste Management Facilitys Convenience Center does not accept mixed paper and non-infectious medical waste.

Recycling at the Transfer Station
The following materials are accepted at the Buncombe
County Transfer Station at no charge:
- lead acid batteries
- newspaper
- corrugated cardboard
- blue bags or co-mingled recyclables including:
- #1 & #2 plastic
- aluminum cans
- clear, green & brown glass
- steel cans
- mixed paper
- residential non-infectious medical waste
The Transfer Station does not accept:
- motor oils
- tires
- wood waste

Directions To Transfer Station
From I-240
- From I-240, take exit 1B (Brevard Road/Hwy. 191). At the traffic light, take Highway 191 North.
- Turn left onto Shelburne Road. Turn left onto Hominy Creek Road.
- The Transfer Station will be on the left.
From I-40
- From I-40, take exit 47 (Brevard Road/Hwy. 191). At the traffic light, take Highway 191 North.
- After crossing I-240, turn left onto Shelburne Road. Turn left onto Hominy Creek Road.
- The Transfer Station will be on the left.
Recycling Blue Bag Instructions
- Plastic soda bottles and milk jugs should be rinsed, flattened and placed in a blue bag. Be sure plastic containers are either #1 PETE or #2HDPE.
- Aluminum and steel food and beverage cans should be rinsed and placed in a blue bag.
- Clear, green, or brown glass bottles or jars should be rinsed and placed in a blue bag. Please remove all lids and rings from the glass.
- Newspapers may be placed in the blue bag as well. They do not have to be bundled separately.
- Cardboard must be flattened and tied in a bundle. This applies to corrugated cardboard only and does not include single ply board such as cereal or shoe boxes.
Please remember that plastic, metal, and glass go in the same blue bag. Cardboard must be bundled separately and placed at the curb with trash and blue bags for pick-up.
