On the evening of April 4, 2004, while serving with the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Department, Sergeant Jeff Hewitt made the ultimate sacrifice for his fellow officers and for the citizens of Buncombe County. Sergeant Hewitt was shot and killed as he and fellow officers attempted to serve involuntary commitment papers on an individual in the Arden area.
THE RACE
The race is Saturday, April 5 at 8 a.m., and the Memorial Walk begins at 8:15 a.m. Register early - ther cap is 300 runners! The Sergeant Jeff Hewitt Memorial 5k will be run at the Cliffs at Walnut Cove, a pristine racing venue.
All proceeds from this race will go to the Jeff Hewitt Memorial Scholarship fund under the direction of AB Tech.
The race is part of the Asheville Track Club’s 2014 Grand Prix Series. The race will be chip timed by Right on Time Productions. Awards will be provided in women's and men's divisions to the top two overall, top two masters and top three by age group – 1-9; 10-14; 15-19; 20-24; 25- 29; 30-34; 35- 39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74; 75-79; and 80+.
