Add your name to the list of people to work Election Day. Every year Election Services of Buncombe County need hundreds of people to man the election voting locations. These are the people who ask voters for their name and address, operate the election voting machines and help voters to cast to their vote.

Each voting location is staffed with a Chief Judge, two Party Judges and a number of Assistants. The Chief Judge is of the same political party as the governor whenever possible. There is one Judge and an equal number of Assistants from each political party. All Judges are responsible for conducting the election.

Chief Judge

The Chief Judge is the head official and is in charge of contacting the voting location and the other officials to make arrangements for each election. The Chief Judge is responsible for handling election day activities, assigning duties, and solving problems. This individual is also responsible for picking up election day supplies prior to each election and for returning all supplies after the polls close.

Judges

The Judges work closely with the Chief Judge. They must study and be knowledgeable of all election laws, procedures and materials. They must sign all official documents and serve on a panel to resolve any challenges.

Assistant

The Assistants serve when needed and at the direction of the Chief Judge. Instruction and training will be provided for each election.

Qualifications:

• Must be a registered voter in Buncombe County
• Of good reputation
• Able to read and write
• Friendly, professional, interested in the political process
• Must be affiliated with the Democratic or Republican Party

No Person Shall Serve Who:

• holds any office in any state congressional district, county or precinct political party or political organization who is a manager or treasurer for any candidate or political party
• who is a candidate for nomination or election
• who is a near relative to another worker in the same precinct or a candidate for nomination or election

Special Information:

• Elections are always held on Tuesday
• All polls are open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p. m.
• All workers must be in the voting location at 6:00 a.m. and remain there until all votes have been counted and documents signed – usually 8:30 p.m.
• All Precincts are non-smoking facilities.

Compensation For Officials

• Chief Judge
  • $160.00 each election
  • $15.00 mandatory training
  • $175.00 total each election
    
    
• Political Party Judge
  • $135.00 each election
  • $15.00 mandatory training
  • $150.00 total each election
    
    
• Precinct Assistant
  • $115.00 each election
  • $15.00 optional training
  • offered usually for federal elections

All training is given before each Election and cannot be carried over from Election to Election.
