The following materials are accepted at the Buncombe County Solid Waste Management Facility’s Convenience Center at no charge:

  • oil filters
  • lead acid batteries
  • newspaper, magazines, office paper & mixed paper
  • corrugated cardboard
  • blue bags or co-mingled recyclables including:
    • plastic bottles with tapered necks only (see below)
    • aluminum cans
    • clear
    • green & brown glass
    • and steel cans
  • motor oils
  • tires - Residents may recycle 10 tires without rims at no charge. After that, tires may be recycled at $2 per tire. All tires on rims (even the first 10) are $2 per tire.

and white goods including:

  • stoves
  • refrigerators
  • air conditioners
  • freezers
  • and all metals

Note: Buncombe County Landfill does not accept non-infectious medical waste.

Wood pallets MUST now be recycled, they will continue to be accepted at the landfill for $20/ton, and will be ground up into mulch.

Plastic Bottles

Plastic that can be recycled: bottles with tapered necks.

Don't worry about the number on the bottom. If the neck of the plastic container is smaller than the base, then it is recyclable. Please remove all lids.

Plastic that cannot be recycled: any plastic that does not have a tapered neck.

Butter tubs, take-out containers, plastic shopping bags and anything else that doesn't have a tapered neck cannot be recycled.

Note: Plastic bottles that contained motor oil or pesticides are specifically excluded from the disposal ban and cannot be recycled.
