Nutrition Division Our Nutrition programs are designed to improve the health and well being of our residents. We offer several programs to benefit adults, children and infants. 
A television cooking show called "Cooking for Your Health" can be seen by following the link below. It can also be viewed on Charter Cable channel 2.  Shows change randomly and provide recipes that are also available at the link below.  The show is produced by our Nutrition Department and Buncombe County TV (BCTV).

Nutrition Services include:

  • Women, Infant and Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Program which improves the health of low income pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, infants and children up to age five who are at nutritional risk.  WIC provides:
  • nutrition education
  • food vouchers to buy certain foods such as: milk, juice, cheese, cereal, dried beans and peas and infant formula
  • referrals for health care
  • Breastfeeding Education and Support by a board certified lactation consultant
  • Medical Nutrition Therapy by a registered dietician, for health center patients and the public who have health problems that are affected by nutrition
  • Free language assistance
  • Food pantry to assist patients of the Buncombe County Health Center

WIC Clinic locations

  • MAHEC-Women’s Health Center  Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
  • Black Mountain Methodist Church - First Monday of each month. By appointment only
  • Asheville City Schools Preschool Program - By appointment
  • Mission Hospitals Mother/Baby Unit: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 12:00 pm

Making an appointment for Nutrition Services

New WIC patients:

  1. Get an application from DSS Access Unit at the Health Center.  DSS Access Unit is open Monday – Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm.
  2. If the woman, infant or child qualifies, the first appointment for WIC is scheduled.

Medical Nutrition Therapy:

Appointments are made by the Health Center’s Primary Care Clinic.  They may also be made by the nutritionist when a referral is received from a private health care provider.

Appointments for school children in Asheville High, Asheville Middle and Erwin Middle schools can be made through the school’s Student Health Center.

Breastfeeding support is available to WIC patients by calling 250-5325.

What to bring with you

  • You will need to bring the following information for each family member that is applying for WIC:
    • Proof of identification such as a valid driver's license, Social Security Card, Medicaid Card, current military ID, birth certificate, immunization record, infant’s crib card with name and measurements. Only one ID is needed.
    • Proof of Residency such as a recent water or electric bill, recent cable, gas or telephone bill, current rental or mortgage agreement. Only one kind of proof is needed.
    • Proof of Income for all household members. This may be a Medicaid Card, letter of Food Stamps or Work First, recent paycheck stubs (less than 60 days old), or recent tax return for someone who is self-employed.
    • All family members who are to be enrolled in WIC must come to the first WIC appointment.
    • Immunization records must be brought to the first appointment for all infants and children up to age 5.

How are services paid for?

There are no charges for WIC services. Payment for Medical Nutrition Therapy may be Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance or self-pay.
