The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office has received an $875,000 grant from the Department of Justice’s Office Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). The grant will be paid out over a period of three years, and will cover 75% of the salaries of the seven new School Resource Officers in the Buncombe County School System. The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office was one of only six agencies in North Carolina to receive an award.
“I am very pleased to let you know that we have received a COPS Grant for our new SROs,” Sheriff Van Duncan Stated. “This award will allow us to expand school security to our elementary schools and facilitate relationships between officers and students.”
The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Sheri Powers, Business Officer with the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office and Jeremiah LeRoy for submitting the COPS grant, and the Buncombe County Commissioners for having the foresight to invest in our children’s safety.
