The Patrol Division, directed by the Patrol Captain, provides the first line of law enforcement response for the communities of Buncombe County. The Executive Lieutenant assists the Division Head. Four Patrol Squads, work in fixed shifts. A Lieutenant, who also acts as the Watch Commander and two Sergeants that supervise in the field supervise each squad. Patrol Deputies receive constant hours of in-service and school training in various areas to provide a wide range of technical expertise and knowledge to better serves our communities.

G Squad

The Sheriffs Reserve Patrol, known as G Squad, are fully dedicated volunteer deputies who complement the regular patrol shifts. These individuals are fully certified sworn law enforcement officers who voluntarily assist the regular patrol officers. They are an invaluable resource to our division, and to the communities they serve. To be a part of this elite squad, each officer agrees to work a minimal of twenty four hours a month. These officers complete the same field-training program as a full time patrol officer, and attend in-service training, to stay current.

Active Reserves

The Active Reserve Squad is made-up of a group of volunteer officers who complement all areas of the Office of the Sheriff. They volunteer their time in all areas throughout the entire department. Each volunteer is trained in the area in which they will be working. To be a part of this dedicated group of volunteers, they are asked to work a minimum of six hours per month. The expertise that these volunteers bring to the Division is unsurpassed.
