Geographical Information Systems

Digitally mapping Buncombe County.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are essentially the computer applications that allow an organization to relate all of it's data to points, lines or areas upon the earth. Examples of GIS data include parcels, street centerlines, surface water, elevations (contours), and aerial imagery.

About Data

The County of Buncombe acquires, develops, maintains and uses GIS data in support of its internal business functions and the public services it provides. The GIS data which Buncombe County distributes and to which it provides access may not be suitable for other purposes or uses. It is the requestor's responsibility to verify any information derived from the GIS data before making any decisions or taking any actions based on the information.

The GIS group is responsible for designing and supporting most of the county's geo-databases and applications related to using and displaying that data. We are also responsible for administering GIS-related data request, and coordinating with outside organizations. As part of that coordination effort, we participate in the state's NCOneMap project, which is a sort of "geospatial backbone" for many state and federal organizations who are interested in using North Carolina's GIS data for their organizations.

Scheduled Down Times

Buncombe County does not guarantee that the data and map services will be available to users without interruption or error. Furthermore, the County of Buncombe may modify or remove map services and access methods at will.

All GIS data is refreshed daily at 6:00 a.m. Monday through Friday.
