Alert -- Immunization Requirement for 6th Grade Entry
All students entering 6th grade are required to receive a new vaccine called Tdap. Students who do not provide proof of vaccination within the first 30 days of school will be suspended until proof is on file. The Tdap vaccine is also required for students entering college or university for the first time.
The law requires that a booster dose of Tdap vaccine be given for:
- All students in public school who:
- are entering the 6th grade and
- have not had a tetanus/diphtheria vaccine in five years or more
- All students who attend private, non-traditional or home schools and who:
- are 12 years of age and
- five years or more have passed since the last tetanus/diphtheria vaccine
- Anyone enrolling in college or university for the first time:
- and 10 or more years have passed since the last tetanus/diphtheria or tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis vaccine has not been received within the past 10 years
This rule change also effects mumps vaccine. Students are now required to receive a second dose of mumps vaccine before enrolling in school, college or university for the first time. Some students may also need to complete the hepatitis B series.
What is Tdap?
Tdap is a vaccine that provides protection against three diseases: tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (commonly called whooping cough).
What if my child doesn't get the vaccine?
Your child’s school must have a copy of an up-to-date vaccination record on the first day of 6th grade. If proof of vaccination is not provided by the end of the 30 calendar day period, the child will be suspended from school until they provide proof of immunization
Where can my child get Tdap?
Parents should contact their child’s doctor to schedule an appointment to receive this vaccine.
Buncombe County Health Center provides vaccines Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (don't arrive after 4:30 p.m.) Be sure to bring a copy of your child's complete immunization record with you. The Health Center will not be able to give vaccines without a complete record.
Is there a cost for Tdap?
No. There is no cost to you at the Health Center for any vaccine that is required. Your doctor may charge a small fee or co-payment to give required vaccines.
Choosing to wait?
Parents/caregivers are strongly encouraged to bring their child to the Health Center as early as possible for these vaccines. Lines and wait times can be very long near the start of school.
Are there any other vaccines that my child needs for 6th grade?
There are other vaccines that are recommended for children at this time including those to prevent chicken pox, meningitis and HPV. The Health Center encourages you to speak with a nurse during your visit or contact your pediatrician about these beneficial vaccines. If you choose to have your child immunized at the Health Center, please bring your insurance information. Although required vaccines are provided at no cost, there is a charge for recommended vaccines.
