Mission Hospital & Register of Deeds: 1st in the State to Simplify Birth Certificate Ordering

Parents of newborns at Mission Hospital in Asheville can now order birth certificates directly from their hospital room. This option relieves families of the need for a trip to a Birth Certificategovernment office during the first days with the newborn.

"This is another step in the right direction for public service, and we’re glad to be partnering with Mission to make this possible,” said Register of Deeds Drew Reisinger. “We’re using technology to complement our traditional in-person services – to make it easier for citizens to access services in a way that is convenient for them."

"We are pleased to be able to collaborate with the Buncombe County Register of Deeds office to provide this convenience for parents of newborns" said Susan Mims, MD, Mission Health Vice President Women’s Services. "This is one less thing new parents will have to worry about during the first days with their newborn, days that often are already quite hectic."

Birth certificates are typically required in order to add a child to health insurance, apply for Kindergarten, and travel on airlines.

The Register of Deeds Office supplied the iPads that Mission maternity staff will hand to new parents. Using a secure form designed by the Buncombe County IT Department, parents can enter their child’s name and other required information onto the application form. Parents sign the form and use a credit or debit card to pay the $10 fee. The certificate is delivered by mail.

All traditional birth certificate purchasing methods are also still available from the Register of Deeds. Certificates can be purchased in person, online, or by mail.

Since 2013, the Register of Deeds office has increased service options by embracing technology, including offering eRecording of real estate documents, accepting credit and debit card payments, and making available online all deeds dating back to the founding of Buncombe County. The office also partnered with Buncombe County GIS and Tax Department to improve online search capabilities related to property.
