The Buncombe County Fire Marshal’s Office is responsible for all fire & life safety inspections in Buncombe County with the exception of any inspections inside the city limits of Asheville, Weaverville or Black Mountain.

Current Fire Code Enforced

  • 2018 Edition of the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code
    • (One & Two family dwellings are exempt from the North Carolina Fire Code.)

Information on Street Names and Sign Installation

New street names are assigned and approved through Buncombe County Planning and must go through their process before signs can be ordered. Replacement signs can be ordered through Buncombe County Planning or the Buncombe County Fire Marshal’s Office. It will normally take two to three months to receive the signs once the order is placed, there is a fee of $45.00 (in the form of a check made out to Buncombe County Government) for signs being installed on private roads. This includes the sign, hardware and installation fees. Once the signs have been received, they will be installed as soon as possible.

  • Fire & Life Safety issues in commercial businesses
  • Roadway Safety issues such as roadways collapsing or washing out
