The Buncombe Soil & Water Conservation District hosted two one-week sessions of Camp WILD this summer. 28 middle and high school students attended the camp to further their knowledge about environmental education and, of course, have some fun too.
They started the week with a tour at the Biltmore Estate through the greenhouses, hydroponic production, and swine farm. We ended the day with river snorkeling at Jukebox Junction. Tuesday began with a morning visit to Davidson River and Sliding Rock, followed by wetland studies at the Pink Beds and a visit to a fish hatchery. Wednesday included leadership and team building at Montreat College followed by ice cream sundaes. High school week participated in a high ropes course in place of ice cream sundaes. Thursday, the students went tubing at Carolina Hemlocks following by an overnight trip to the Forest Service Training Center. Friday’s activities included a scavenger hike at Grandfather Mountain followed by braving the mile high swinging bridge.
Environmental education camps are a great way for students to learn about a variety of issues pertaining to our natural resources. Camps afford students enough time to do more in-depth studies and do hands-on learning activities. Students come away with a new appreciation of the great outdoors and knowledge of the natural environment that will guide their decisions in the future.
