Sleep Under the Stars: Great American Campout is June 22

Buncombe County Recreation Services will join thousands of families across the nation gathering in their backyards, neighborhoods, and parks to celebrate the Great American Campout at Lake Julian Park (406 Overlook Road Extension in Arden) on Saturday, June 22. The annual event, presented by the National Wildlife Federation, brings together families, friends, and youth groups to connect with nature for a fun and memorable night sleeping under the stars.

“There is no better way to inspire a lifelong appreciation of and relationship with nature than to spend a night outdoors beneath the stars,” according to Josh O’Conner, Director of Buncombe County Recreation Services. “Camping is traditionally part of the summertime experience for many families, but can get overlooked in these days of ‘indoor childhood.’ We’re thrilled to provide an experience for all generations to connect with the natural world and one another.”

Lake Julian Park does not usually allow overnight camping, but acts as an inspiring location for the nocturnal event. No prior camping experience is required as the Great American Campout is designed as a low-frill backyard campout. Attendees bring their own tents and sleeping bags.

Campers can participate in a handful of planned activities including hikes, a night walk, a scavenger hunt, a traditional campfire, and – of course – s’mores. Campsites will be available at 5 p.m. on Saturday with on-site check-in at 6 p.m. Campers should be packed up by 10 a.m. on Sunday.
