Updated Nov. 15: Lap swim schedules are currently being updated regularly. Click here for the up-to-date schedule.
Adults looking for an affordable indoor pool to practice laps have a new dedicated space. Buncombe County Schools and YMCA of Western North Carolina have announced public hours for the new Buncombe County Schools Aquatics Center on the T.C. Roberson High School campus, across from Ensley Stadium (18 Ensley Stadium Loop in Asheville). Click here for the up-to-date lap swim schedule.
“Residents regularly request dedicated times for adults to swim laps at our outdoor pools,” according to Josh O’Conner, Director of Buncombe County Recreation Services. “Since we offer open swim daily at those locations, the logistics of also providing dedicated lap swim times are hard to line up. We operated an indoor pool at Zeugner Aquatics Center near the new Buncombe County Schools facility for over 50 years and are happy to partner with Buncombe County Schools and YMCA of Western North Carolina to offer these public hours for adults to swim laps.”
While the lap swim hours are primarily offered for adults, children are welcome as long as they are swimming laps, too. Buncombe County Schools Aquatics Center does not offer informal recreation or open swim at this time. American Red Cross certified lifeguards are provided through a management agreement with YMCA of Western North Carolina. A punch pass is $45 for 15 visits (which averages to $3 per visit) and can be purchased online, at Reuter Family YMCA (3 Town Square Boulevard in Asheville), or at the aquatics center. Day passes may also be purchased at the pool for $5 per person.
Buncombe County Schools Aquatics Center is a 17,380 square foot building featuring a 10-lane, 400,000 gallon climate-controlled pool. The center also includes 420 spectator seats, a state-of-the-art timing and scoreboard system, UV water filtration, and numerous energy efficient design features. The facility is available for group rentals.
