From Buncombe County Sherrif's Office
As we close out Black Legacy Month and transition to Women’s History Month, please join us in congratulating Major Jillian Banks on her achievements as the first Black person and first woman to reach the rank of Captain and recently the role of Major at the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office.
Major Banks worked her way through the ranks of the Sheriff’s Office since starting at the Detention Facility as a Commissary Officer in 1996. After completing DOCC school, she worked as a Detention Officer from 1998 until 2006, reaching the rank of Sergeant. From 2006 to January 2022 she served in our Court Security Unit rising to the rank of Captain. Sheriff Miller appointed her as Major in January of 2022.
“In my opinion, Major Banks has the important people skills but also the equally important tenacity and confidence that make her ideally suitable for this position," says Chief Deputy Herbert Blake. "I am proud of her ascension. I am proud of the historic imprint she has made in the law enforcement community."
Prior to joining the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office, Major Banks was raised in the Deaverview Community and graduated from Erwin High School. Major Banks takes pride in the consistent perseverance and discipline her career has allowed her to master throughout the years and feels extremely honored to serve in her new position, hoping it will pave the way for others. “I experienced hardships that allowed me to understand the importance of treating others with dignity and respect," says Major Banks. "I wanted a better life for my daughters, and I have sought to do everything I can to provide that. I hope my accomplishments are a testament of all you can achieve through faith, diligence, humility, and a desire to make a difference."
