Following a nationwide search for Buncombe’s next finance director, we’re excited to announce Melissa Moore will permanently fill the position. From the pool, the County looked to Texas to find the right fit. “Melissa’s public and private experience as well as her interpersonal skills made her stand out,” noted County Manager Avril Pinder. “The Finance Director is a critical member of our team. Over the past four years, we’ve been intentionally focusing on fiscal responsibility and transparency. This position plays an integral role in helping us continue that objective. Also, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Mason Scott for his leadership as the interim director during this transitional period.”
Melissa’s most recent stint was as the Finance Director of Pflugerville, Texas, and she brings more than 20 years of fiscal experience along with her. Noting she was extremely attracted to this opening, Melisssa is excited to be heading to Buncombe County. “This represents an opportunity to relocate to the East Coast, grow my career by serving in a larger organization, and join a brilliant leadership team. Having a seat at the table with leadership that has demonstrated perseverance, integrity, and service is a very exciting place to be,” she exclaims.
Melissa has a Bachelor of Business Administration from Texas State University and a Master of Business Administration from Webster University. Bringing a strong and diverse portfolio of experience in the private and public sectors, she understands the pivotal role her position plays. “Local government has a direct impact on individuals, more than any private-sector company such as Amazon or Google. It impacts quality of life through providing services such as public safety, education, and infrastructure. It also impacts your personal finances through taxation and fees,” explains Melissa. “The finance role is very important to members of the community to keep everyone informed of the financial performance of Buncombe County. As a taxpayer, you should be able to find information that tells you how your tax dollars are working to provide services and programs for the community.”
The finance director is a dual-report position, and the Board of Commissioners is responsible for the hiring and firing of this position while the County Manager oversees day-to-day operations. Melissa is slated to start the position on Sept. 18.
