World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15th. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was launched on June 15, 2006, by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations.
Buncombe County Elder Justice Coalition is partnering with several agencies, such as Land of Sky Area Agency on Aging, Buncombe County Adult and Aging Services, Legal Aid of North Carolina, Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office, Van Winkle Law Firm, North Carolina State Employees’ Credit Union, and North Carolina Department of Justice to host the 2024 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) Walk on Thursday, June 13, from 2 pm to 4 pm at Carrier Park located at 220 Amboy Road.
We are excited to announce that Holly Jones, with the Department of Justice, will be our keynote speaker this year. This multi-generational event is free to all and will include information about elder abuse, its impacts on our community, and information from local agencies that offer actions and support to combat elder abuse. We will be providing reusable canvas grocery totes, magnets, and ice cream from Annie B’s. Thank you for the generosity of the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office and the Land of Sky Ombudsman Program who will provide free ice cream! New this year is that we will have ADA-compliant portable toilets near the picnic shelter.
Sponsorships range from $60 - $1000. If you would like to be a sponsor, please see the attached Vendor and Sponsorship Form. The sponsorship deadline is May 1, 2024.
