At its meeting on April 22, the Buncombe County Planning Board made a motion to defer proposed short-term rental text amendments based on the desire to slow the process down and further evaluate the need for regulations. No formal recommendations will move to the Board of Commissioners at this time. The Planning Board vote comes after a months-long process with multiple work and listening sessions. Find all sessions available at engage.buncombecounty.org.

What to Know

The Commissioners have now established the Short-Term Rental Ad Hoc Committee to review the proposed text amendments from where the Planning Board left off. The Committee will ultimately make recommendations to the Planning Board about how to proceed. All final decisions belong to Commissioners. In the meantime, the Planning Board continues its review of text amendment topics from the Comprehensive Plan like Crypto-currency and Goverment Protective Services.

Next steps for Comprehensive Plan implementation

After the adoption of the 2043 Comprehensive Plan, staff is working through a series of text amendments to the County’s development ordinances. The Comprehensive Plan acts like a guide with a series of goals for the County. Ultimately, the plan will inform decision-makers, policies, and regulations that align with the vision of Buncombe County's future.

Learn more about that process here and stay tuned to buncombecounty.org for information on the next Planning Board meeting.
