Commissioners Approve Funding New 911 Backup Call Center, Consolidating Some Forward-Facing Services to 35 Woodfin

Buncombe County is in the midst of a years-long comprehensive facilities transition aimed at maximizing existing space, co-locating forward-facing departments to improve the resident experience, and reduce the number of unnecessary properties from our portfolio. To complete this project, Commissioners approved establishing a Capital Projects Fund initiative with a budget of $3.8 million to relocate the 911 Backup Call Center to 35 Woodfin. That budget will be funded by reallocating money from two existing projects.

Commissioners also approved two construction contracts that will help with the consolidation of forward-facing departments at 35 Woodfin. Ultimately, this will save taxpayer dollars and has allowed us to reimagine how our public-facing departments are meeting the needs of our community.

What public-facing departments will be housed at 35 Woodfin?

  • Family Justice Center
  • Tax Assessment
  • Tax Collection
  • Board of Elections
  • Permits & Inspections
  • Planning
  • Air Quality
  • Environmental Health

Special consideration for the unique needs of the Family Justice Center (FJC) are part of the renovation and update plans. All existing County and partner agencies will remain with the FJC at 35 Woodfin. There will be a separate entrance and space for those seeking the services of the FJC. Providing a safe and private space for those accessing services from the FJC is a priority, and the County understands the importance of this one-stop resource center and values its role in providing a place where survivors of abuse can access resources. If you, or anyone you know needs information about the FJC, call (828) 250-6900.

Construction timeline

Construction will get going immediately after approval of the contract. The current timeline (may be subject to change) is for the renovations and upgrades to be complete by February 2025 with move-in dates beginning the following month in March. General Services will work with each department individually to ease this transition.

You can see the presentation to the Board on the updates to 35 Woodfin here.
