Celebrate Smokey Bear's Birthday with the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge

Celebrate Smokey Bear’s 80th Birthday at the library! Join Smokey in learning about wildfires and the environment. Kids can earn badges and prizes for reading with Smokey.

Starting Sept. 17, kids between age 4 and 10 can visit their local library and pick up a Smokey’s Reading Challenge activity sheet. To complete the challenge, read 3 or more books about wildfire prevention and caring for forests and earn 4 badges by completing at least one activity from each badge. When you’ve finished your activity sheet, take it back to the library and it will be stamped with an official Smokey Bear stamp and you’ll get a Smokey sticker.

The reading challenge will end November 16. You can get started anytime at one of the 12 libraries across Buncombe County to learn about forest conservation and Smokey Bear's legacy. And remember…only you can prevent wildfires.
