Turn Around, Don't Down During Hazardous Weather Conditions

When hazardous weather is forecasted in our region, the National Weather Service issues warnings for the community to prepare and avoid risky conditions.

Hazardous weather includes showers, thunderstorms, strong winds and lightning. One of the most pressing concerns for our area is localized flooding in low-lying and poor-drainage areas.

During flood warnings remember to turn around, don’t drown if you see water on the road.

  • Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control and possible stalling.
  • A foot of water will float many vehicles.
  • Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles, including sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and pick-ups.

We want to help you be prepared and safe when bad weather hits the area. Always call 911 if you are in immediate danger or need emergency assistance. For non-emergency situations, such as trees down, use these non-emergency numbers:

  • Fire & Medical (County/City) - 250-6650
  • County, Black Mountain, Woodfin, Weaverville, Montreat (including animal control) - 250-6670
