I Have Walked This Road Too: Peer Support for First Responders

Ready to Listen: Meet Your First Responder Peer Support Teams

Paramedics, law enforcement, EMTs, and 911 dispatchers play a vital role in keeping us safe and responding to emergencies. But the constant exposure to high-stress, life-threatening, and traumatic events can take a toll on their mental and emotional health. While professional help is important, peer support has become just as essential for first responders. Peers understand what is like to run into harm’s way while everyone else runs away from it.

Buncombe County Emergency Services, Buncombe County 911 Call Center, and Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office have peer support teams that provide a compassionate ear and guidance to collages navigating the stresses of demanding jobs. Peers offer a safe space to discuss mental health challenges, all while being confidential.

We would like to highlight Peer Support Teams and the critical role they play in supporting the mental and emotional health of our employees. As always, Emergency Services, 911 Call center, and Sheriff’s Office staff are encouraged to reach out to peers who are ready to listen.
