Buncombe Eyes Updated West Asheville Library, Emergency Services

Buncombe County’s library portfolio is one of our most beloved amenities, and we’re always looking for ways to improve your experience at all 12 branches. With the vacancy left by the closure of Asheville Primary School at the intersection of Haywood Road and I-240, County staff is researching possible community collaborations to improve a range of services. While one of those projects includes investigating the feasibility of a regional Emergency Services base for the former school, there could also be room to use that space for an updated West Asheville Library.

This process is only in the exploratory phase, but there is a focus on looking into the possibility of creating ways to provide new amenities and improved services while continuing to be a central hub of resources for the West Asheville community. Currently, the County is in the early stages of working with the Asheville City School Board to explore the potential and we will continue to keep the public updated on the status of this project. Should we decide to move ahead, we will be asking for your input on how to best utilize a new library branch. While the County and ACS are far from deciding and any changes would be years away, we wanted to let the public know about this potential development.

Meantime, you can continue to get personalized services, creative programing, and unique resources at the current West Asheville Library. Did you know the West Asheville Library has an ongoing book sale, story time, research assistance, art exhibit space, and more? You can also get personalized book bundles, attend a Lego club meeting, and even find take-home craft kits. For more information on all 12 of the County’s library branches, click here.
