Buncombe County Public Libraries (BCPL) have added a new resource for beginning readers – Stairway Decodeable books.
Capstone Stairway Decodables are phonics readers designed around the Science of Reading. All titles are 80 percent decodable, meaning children are encouraged to sound out words using decoding strategies rather than guessing words through pictures. Each title is a building block to the next level based on phonic knowledge. All levels work on building comprehension, vocabulary, and letter sound recognition.
“One of the most frequently requested collection items by caregivers is a set of books designed teach children how to read,” Megan Northcote, Youth Services Manager for BCPL, said. “While all of our branches offer a wide variety of easy readers, each publisher uses a different leveling system making it challenging for caregivers to know where to start when it comes to teaching and reinforcing beginning reading skills in a consistent, step-by-step way.”
Each decodable hardback title has a different focus that features bright, colorful graphics and engaging story lines. For many BCPL locations, these decodables offer a refreshing upgrade to the Bob books, an older phonics reader series featuring black and white drawings. Stairway Decodeables are clearly labeled to help educators and caregivers easily identify the right resource for their reader.
This new resource was made possible by a $10,000 donation from The Buncombe County Public Library Trust Fund. The donation includes a set of 60 Stairway Decodables from Capstone Publishing for every library as well new display racks for the collections at several locations.
The Stairway Decodables is available at all 12 BCPL locations now. Check out the collection here. For more information about these Stairway Decodables, visit your local library.
