Buncombe County Parks & Recreation Announces Its Spring 2025 Program and Event Schedule

As the new season approaches, Buncombe County Parks & Recreation's programming is ready to spring to life. The lineup will include festivals, birding excursions, fishing, hiking, clubs, and a whole lot of fun for everyone.

CORE Programming
Tuesdays, March-May, 3-5 p.m.
Grovemont Park
The Community Outreach and Recreation Experiences (CORE) team will bring fun and games to the park throughout the season.

Birding Walk and Boat Tour
First and last Saturdays, March-October, 8:30-11:30 a.m.
Lake Julian Park
Get to know the birds of Lake Julian, one of Buncombe County's top birding hotspots! The tour starts with a walk along the shore of Lake Julian and ends with birding on the lake from Lake Julian’s pontoon boat. The program is free, but registration is required. 

Winter Warm Up
Saturday, March 8, 1-4 p.m.
Lake Julian Park
Bring your family, friends, and love for the outdoors and join us for s’mores, hot chocolate, crafts, play and more to celebrate the changing season. This free event is open to all ages, and no registration is required.

Dog Eggstravaganza
Saturday, April 12, 1 p.m.
Dog Park at Buncombe County Sports Park
Springtime fun for our four-legged friends! Dogs will be divided into small and large dog divisions and each division will have approximately 30 minutes to find as many hidden eggs (filled with treats) as possible. In addition, dogs who collect the most eggs will receive a special prize. This program is free, but registration is required

Earth Day Clean Up and Service Projects
Tuesday, April 22, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Lake Julian Park
Give back this Earth Day with Buncombe County Parks and Recreation. Volunteers are invited to assist in clean-up and service projects, like landscaping and debris removal. All tools and materials will be provided. Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. Volunteers groups are limited in capacity, so volunteer registration is required.

Spring Festival
Saturday, April 26, 1-4 p.m.
Lake Julian Park
Join us with friends and family as we celebrate Earth Day and the spring season! Games, pontoon boat tours, Earth Day crafts and education, kayak demos from waterways, and more. Make your own mini greenhouse and visit with community partners. This free event is open to all ages, and no registration is required.

Youth Disc Golf Clinic
Saturday, May 10, 10-11 a.m.
Buncombe County Sports Park
Join Western North Carolina Disc Golf Association players for an introductory disc golf clinic. This free clinic is for all youth up to age 17. Registration is required.

Adult Disc Golf Clinic
Saturday, May 10, 12-1 p.m.
Buncombe County Sports Park
Join Western North Carolina Disc Golf Association players for an introductory and clinic into Disc Golf. This free clinic is for all adults, 18+. No experience necessary. Registration is required.

IDD Disc Golf Clinic
Saturday, May 10, 2-3 p.m.
Buncombe County Sports Park
Join Western North Carolina Disc Golf Association players for an introductory and clinic into Disc Golf. This free clinic is participants with intellectual and developmental abilities. No experience necessary. Registration is required.

Spring Kid’s Fishing Tournament
Saturday, May 17, 8:30-11:30 a.m.
Lake Julian Park
For young anglers ages 15 and under are invited to compete in the first fishing tournament of 2025. Competitors will be divided into age groups (0-5, 6-10, and 11-15) with prizes in each division for biggest fish caught, smallest fish caught, and most fish caught. The admission for the fishing tournaments is $10, which includes bait, beverages, breakfast, and snacks. Register online

Summer Family Campout
Saturday, June 14, 12 p.m.
Lake Julian Park
This bi-annual event will bring together families and friends to connect with nature for a fun and memorable night sleeping under the stars. No prior camping experience is required as the campout is designed as a low-frill backyard campout for first time campers. Attendees will need to bring their own tents and sleeping bags. The $40 family ticket covers camping, dinner, breakfast, and activities. Registration is required.

Wander Buncombe Naturalist Hikes
First Saturday and third Wendesday, March-October
Various locations
Join us as we explore the trails of Buncombe County. The hikes are free, but registration is required

55+ Club
First and third Wednesdays, beginning in April
Various locations
The 55+ Club will meet twice a month year-round for various excursions and activities to explore and enjoy Buncombe County. Join for hikes, pontoon boat tours at Lake Julian, gardening, baseball games, yoga and meditation, bocce, dancing, museums, and more. Cost for the events will vary, and registration is required

Fishing Club
Thursdays, beginning in April
Lake Julian Park
Youth up to age 15 are invited to join us for our inaugural Fishing Club at Lake Julian! Participants can attend one or all dates. Families are invited to join for an evening of fun and fishing, and our CORE Van will also be on site with games and activities. Each event will start with a brief educational session followed by fishing. Participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing pole, but bait will be provided and a limited number of fishing poles will be available to use. The club is free, but registration is required. All youth must be accompanied by an adult.
