The Buncombe County Landfill doesn’t just provide trash and recycling services. It also provides electricity! Through the Buncombe Bioreactor project, Buncombe County is able to convert the methane generated by the decomposition of waste into electricity. The County is able to generate enough electricity to power 1,100 homes in the area. In addition, Solid Waste has an electric vehicle charging station at the landfill that is used to power its own EV. The vehicle literally runs on trash! This further reduces the carbon footprint of the facility and makes progress towards the County’s sustainability goals.
