Buncombe County’s Community Transportation System, Mountain Mobility, was the recipient of the inaugural North Carolina Department of Transportation Public Transportation Division’s Innovations in Transit Service Award.
The award highlights an innovative transit service solution and associated positive service outcomes after implementation. The NCDOT PTD recognizes a single system deserving of the Innovation Award at its annual conference.
Mountain Mobility was recognized for development of an incentive program put in place by its operations contractor to improve rates of on-time performance, and for innovation in delivering a more effective public transportation service with existing resources. This was achieved without reliance on additional vehicles, vehicle operators, administrative staff, or software. Improvements in on-time performance were made without impeding productivity.
Since implementing the solution, Mountain Mobility has experienced its four highest on-time performance months and 7 of the top 10 highest on-time performance months since 2011.
Debbie Collins, NCDOT PTD Director, was pleased to recognize Mountain Mobility and noted “This project was well defined, had measureable results and most importantly showed an investment of the individual employees in the system’s performance. Very remarkable project.”
Mountain Mobility’s vehicle operators, dispatchers, schedulers, administrative staff, and management all felt part of the innovative solution and collectively share in the excitement of being recognized for the innovative approach.
