Visitation

Visitation appointments are made by the visitor. On site visitations are Monday thru Friday 09:00am till 10:30am and 01:00pm till 03:30pm. Saturday on site visitation is 11:00am till 03:30pm. Visits are in 20 minute intervals and must be scheduled 24 hours in advance. First-time visits can be arranged at the Detention Facility Front Desk at (828) 250-4610 or (828) 250-4557. Additional visits can be scheduled online for your convenience.

Visitation Rules

  • Visitors must have valid state or federal ID card or driver's license. All identification must contain bearer's photograph.
  • Minors fifteen (15) years old, or younger, do not need identification when a parent or legal guardian accompanies them.
  • Adults sixteen (16) years old, or older, must have proper identification to visit.
  • Children may not be left unattended at any time.
  • No purses, female wallets, bags, pocket knives, weapons, cellular phones, radios, cameras, pens, pencils, paper, tobacco items, matches, lighters, pictures, nail clippers, nail files, sharp items, or recording devices of any kind are allowed.
  • No items may be left unattended in the lobby area.
  • A visit may consist of one adult and one child.
  • Inappropriate behavior including but not limited to abusive language or use of obscenities will immediately end your visit.
  • You and the inmate must remain fully clothed at all times.

Phone Calls

Inmates may use the phones to make calls during any free time for the housing unit they are assigned. The calls are not collect. You must have an account set up for your phone or have funds deposited for the inmate to use for phone calls. Purchase calling cards & phone time online.

Mail

Effective October 3, 2022, the Buncombe County Detention Facility will no longer accept non-privileged postal mail from family and friends of the inmates. The Detention Facility has engaged a new Mail Management Service provider called TextBehind. Going forward, the mailroom staff will review, approve and print your mail at this facility during business hours.

MAILING OPTIONS

  1. Sending Electronic Mail through TextBehind:

    For faster delivery and convenience, family and friends can now create and send electronic letters, greeting cards, photos, and drawings by children at an affordable cost online by visiting TextBehind.com using a computer or by downloading the FREE TextBehind mobile app for smartphones. The inmates will receive all family and friends’ electronic mail in high-quality print form.

  2. Sending Hand-Written Mail by Postal Service to TextBehind:

    If you choose to write letters by postal service, you must send your letters to the following TextBehind mailing address to be photocopied in high quality before being forwarded to this correctional facility. To meet the mail processing standards, every mail envelope sent to an offender must contain the following information:

    1. Sender’s complete first and last name. Initials are not acceptable.
    2. Sender’s complete return address.
    3. Offender’s complete first and last name. Initials are not acceptable.
    4. Offender Number.
    5. Correctional institution full name. Abbreviations are not acceptable.

Any envelope without complete or missing information as specified above, either for the sender or the offender will be rejected and discarded UNOPENED without exception. The correct address format is as follows:

UNACCEPTABLE MAIL

TextBehind does not accept legal mail, money orders, personal checks, gift cards, or cash in the mail. These unacceptable items will be returned to the sender. Please advise your family and friends to visit www.TextBehind.com website for more information.

All TextBehind mail will be processed and delivered to the correctional institution daily Monday through Friday.

Commissary

The Inmate Commissary is the inmate store where health and comfort items may be purchased. Items such as aspirin, crackers, food, additional personal items, writing material, and sodas may be purchased in the commissary. Inmates can receive money for their account from family and friends to spend in the commissary online at InmateCanteen.com or via the kiosk located in the main lobby of the Detention Facility.

Property

The Detention Facility does not routinely accept property for inmates. Additional clothing and additional personal items are provided or you may deposit money for the inmate to purchase additional items through the commissary.
