Special Olympics Buncombe County Spring Games Returns on May 1

This May, more than 600 local athletes will run, jump, and throw their way to victory at the Special Olympics Buncombe County Spring Games. Due to high participation, there will be two events this year, taking place on Thursday, May 1 at T.C. Roberson High School and on Thursday, May 8 at A.C. Reynolds High School. The opening ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. for each event.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run, whose mission is to raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics movement, will take place before the games. The Spring Games Torch Runs are facilitated by the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office and Asheville Police Department, whose officers will be joined by officers from the State Bureau of Investigation.

On May 1 at 9 a.m., the Torch Run will start at the Chick-fil-A at 1832 Hendersonville Road, Asheville. On May 8 at 9 a.m., the Torch Run will start at Smokey and the Pig, which is located at 913 Charlotte Highway, Fairview.

This year’s games are presented by Special Olympics Buncombe County and Buncombe County Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Buncombe County Public Schools, Asheville City Schools, and Asheville Parks and Recreation. The team is also grateful for continued support from the six local operators of Chick-fil-A locations in Buncombe County and their generous sponsorship of lunch for all athletes, volunteers, buddies, teachers, and chaperones – about 2,000 lunches in all.

Buncombe County Parks & Recreation supports Special Olympics Buncombe County by volunteering staff time to administer the Special Olympics local program in Buncombe County. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds from Lake Julian Park’s Festival of Lights are donated to Special Olympics Buncombe County.

Special Olympics Buncombe County is made possible through fundraising, volunteering, and donations. To donate, volunteer, or register an athlete, please email buncombe@sonc.net
