Local Government Closures: 

  • Government operations will be closed indefinitely as all available resources are being directed towards emergency response efforts. 
  • City offices and parks closed. 
  • City of Asheville offices and parks will be closed until further notice.

Schools: 

Schools and Asheville City Schools both remain closed indefinitely. A-BTech and UNC Asheville remain closed indefinitely. 

Trash and Recycling Service 

  • WastePro is beginning regular routes where roads are accessible.
  • WastePro will resume recycling on Monday, Oct. 14. The City of Asheville will also resume trash and recycling services on the same day. 
  • If you have a way to transport, drop trash off at the County Landfill (85 Panther Branch Road, Alexander). M-F 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.  
  • Hominy Creek Transfer Station: Open for household bagged trash Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 
  • Trash is NOT accepted at our water distribution sites.

ART Bus Service: 

Beginning Monday, October 14, ART bus service will increase the span of service with select routes operating in areas where road conditions have improved. For weekday and Saturday service, the span of service will be extended with select routes operating from approximately 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday service hours will resume as normal.

  • Three additional routes will be brought back online: N1, 170 and S4.
  • The routes will have flag stop service, allowing passengers to signal the driver and board at their preferred location along the route (same side of road the bus is traveling) in addition to designated stops. 
  • ART Paratransit services are resuming where possible. Paratransit customers should call (828) 250-6750 to schedule transportation.

Consumer Protection:  

North Carolina Consumer Protection Agency lines are open to report price gouging and other Helene-related concerns. To report, call 1-877-5-NO-SCA.M. (1-877-566-7226). All bad actors taking advantage of this situation should be reported.   

Internet and Charging:  

West Asheville Public Library (942 Haywood Road, Asheville) and Pack Memorial Library (67 Haywood St., Asheville), and Enka-Candler Library (1404 Sand Hill Road, 
Candler, 28715) The password is “readmore” (one word, lowercase). 

Mobile charging and internet connectivity station is set up in the lower parking lot of the First Baptist Church in Black Mountain (130 Montreat Rd.)  

Asheville YMCA: The Downtown Asheville YMCA is now open daily from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. to distribute essential items to the public. This location is also open (outside) for WiFi and charging. 

Buncombe County Permitting: 
The Buncombe County Permits Office has taken permit applications to electrical supply companies that are open. Additionally, if you are able to get there, the Permits Office at 30 Valley St. is open for permitting Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. If you have access to the internet, we are accepting electronic permit applications at our development portal at https://aca-prod.accela.com/buncombeconc/default.aspx.  

Permits are being issued however please take note note-If you are in the special flood hazard area you will have additional requirements specific to your project. Check regulations BEFORE you start rebuilding.

ATMs: 

A Mobile PNC Bank ATM is on Weaver Boulevard in Weaverville. 

Cellular Service 

Family Justice Center: 35 Woodfin Street. Limited cellular reception within several city blocks. 

Asheville Middle School: 211 S. French Broad Ave, and 

Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Community Center: 285 Livingston St. 

Groce United Methodist Church: 954 Tunnel Road, Asheville
