About Air Quality Regulations
Air quality regulations apply to a variety of air pollution sources and are meant to protect air quality by limiting air pollution in accordance with state, federal, and local requirements. All sources of air pollution are required to comply with applicable rules. Some facilities are required to apply for and obtain air quality permits to construct and operate sources of air pollution. Please contact the Agency and inquire about what requirements you may need to comply with if you have sources of air pollution at your business.
The rules for determining whether an air quality permit is required are in 17.0102 of the Asheville-Buncombe Air Quality Code.
Title V
Asheville-Buncombe Air Quality Agency issues permits to facilities that are subject to the federal “Title V” program, which includes the larger facilities with the potential to emit 100 tons of a criteria air pollutant, 10 tons of a hazardous air pollutant, or 25 tons of a combination of hazardous air pollutants per year. Criteria air pollutants include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, volatile organic compounds, or particulate matter of 10 microns or smaller. Copies of Title V permits are available for viewing on this page.
